Project summary

The project aims to increase energy efficiency of steel production shops at PJSC «Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works» by replacing production technology of OHFs and Bloming Mills with modern LD Converters (as demonstrated on the schemes below).

Technology

Project activity envisages installation of:

  • two LD Oxygen Converters (with capacity of 300t each);
  • twin Ladle-furnaces (with capacity 300 t/ 50 MW);
  • two Slab Casters (with capacity of 2,5 mio.t. each)
   

The project became the first project in the world which was registered under Track 1 procedure of JI mechanism of the Kyoto protocol. Besides, the project is considered to be one of the most complicated ones (it includes calculation and adaptation of several hundred parameters). The project presents the unique methodology for estimation and calculation of GHG emission reductions for the base and project line.

Emission reductions of СО2

The project implementation leads to GHG emission reductions due to:

  1. decrease of natural gas consumption;
  2. decrease of the blast furnace gas consumption in the steel production process;
  3. decrease of pig-iron resources (raw-materials) consumption.
